Policies and Procedures

Shelving Rules

Books should be shelved promptly so students can locate them via the online catalog (see Call Number/Area Codes.)  Sort materials by the appropriate area first, then  proceed to the shelves.<>

  • Fiction books are shelved first by the first three letters of the author’s last name, then alphabetically by the title/s of the book (ignore A, An, or The at the beginning of the title).
  • Biographies are shelved by the first three letters of the biographee's last name.
  • Nonfiction books are shelved according to the Dewey Decimal number (see Dewey Decimal Classification System), followed by the first three letters of the authors last name, then alphabetically by book title (if more than one book by the same author on the same subject).
  • 920 Collective Biographies.  Shelve these in the 900’s using the first three letters of the author's last name.  If there is more than one book by the same person, shelve them alphabetically by title.
  • Books with OS (oversized), SP (special collections), CRC (Career Resource Center), PROF (professional), or REF (reference) follow nonfiction book shelving instructions within their sections.

Shelf Reading

Shelf reading is a good way to learn the collection. 

Pick a section of shelves to read (by particular call number for nonfiction, or author if fiction). Pay particular attention to grouping authors together with their titles in alphabetical order. 

If authors or call numbers are out of order from the section you are working on, pull them off to re-shelve later (use a cart or table to keep them separate).  This way you won't get confused as to where you left off.
