- Information
Literacy Instruction -
Information literacy instruction is defined as the
teaching of those skills necessary to locate relevant and useful
information for all types of research projects. Instruction can
be one-on-one, small group, or by class, and can be both formal and
informal.
General Instruction
Oreintation to basic information literacy skills will be given to
classes embarking on research assignments. General instruction on
use of online indexes/databases, online catalog, bibliographic citation
format, use of specific types of reference sources, web searching and
evaluation can be arranged.
Depending on the assignment, time should be reserved with the librarian
ahead of time to go over the assignment and its objectives, reserve
time in the library for the class/s, and agree on the specivid
instruction to be offered - one week notification a minimum is
requested.
Course-Integrated
Instruction
Instruction can be developed to coincide with subject units - either
one assignment or multiple assignments which incorporate the learning
of information literacy skills and procedures with subject
content,. This instruction is best when designed by the librarian
and teacher together.
Course-integrated instruction should be scheduled as far in advance as
possible to allow adequate planning and development to take
place. Two weeks is minimum, but a semester ahead is not
unreasonable, expecially for multiple instructional sessions to be
incorporated.
Individual Research
Assistance
The librarian is available , by appointment, to assist students and
faculty on an individual basis with research needs.
