Procedures for Assisting
Students
- Encourage students to use the online catalog
when they
are trying to find things, especially when they need a book on a
specific
subject.
- Learn as many of
the students’ names as possible: this
not only makes them feel welcome, but it also makes it easier when
dealing with
them in the library.
- Make it a point
to ask students if they need any help
in finding what they need.
- Staff should
present themselves in a professional
manner at all time.
- Staff are always
available to help - that’s our job!
- Remind students
to sign in at the desk - it's for
their own good as well as our statistics!
Teachers/Staff
- Make a point to
ask staff if they need help finding
what they came in for.
- If they are
signing up to bring a class to the library,
refer them to the librarian
- If they need
assistance in reserving equipment or
computer labs, make sure that they understand the procedures
and that
the equipment they want will be available. Remind
them that they may negotiate computer lab
times/equipment with
their fellow teachers if there is a conflict of times and/or equipment
(library
staff are not responsible for alleviating conflicts).
This is most true with the computer labs.
- Know the staff! Make it a point to learn their names, and
always
refer to them as Mr.,
Mrs. Miss, Dr., Ms in front of students, never by their first names.
- Go the extra
mile for staff. If you have a question
about procedure, check
with the librarian. If you make a
decision on you own which is outside of policy or procedure, simply
inform the
librarian.
