The mission of the NHC is "to save lives and curtail the economic impact of hurricanes by issuing watches, warnings, forecasts, and analyzes of hazardous tropical weather." Much of the information needed to do this work is available at NHC's web site, including a variety of satellite images, aircraft reconnaissance information, and hurricane tracking data. Other links cover FAQs on hurricanes, forecasting models, historical data, and information on other weather agencies.

Students work in teams and use web-based resources to track a hurricane. The Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, has a very special unit of aviators and scientists called "Hurricane Hunters." Unlike most people, they study hurricanes, up close! These experienced aviators have been flying their aircraft into the eyes of hurricanes since 1944, and you can join them! While enroute, learn about the crew, the instruments used, and the data collected. Great stuff!
