A reworking of Tokien's novel, The Hobbit, in a science-fiction setting.  It tells of a search by a group of adventurers for a lost colony in space.  The protagonists include Bailey, an asteroid miner, Gitana, a woman who is part cyborg, and Fluffy, a part-cat spaceship.

Edgewick Lamplighter, a little halfling librarian, hardly has time to daydream of adventure before it finds him--in the form of pirates, slaveholders, and thieves.

Okorafor-Mbachu, Nnedi. The shadow speaker. [2007].  

Fourteen-year-old "shadow speaker" Ejii sets off across the Sahara in 2070 in search of her father's killer, and discovers a greater purpose to her life and to the mystical powers she possesses.

Matt, a young cabin boy aboard an airship, and Kate, a wealthy young girl traveling with her chaperone, team up to search for the existence of mysterious winged creatures reportedly living hundreds of feet above the Earth's surface.

A psychopathic cop-killer named Carcer has been cornered on a rooftop at Unseen University. Vimes -- a hands-on sort of commander --sets off in hot pursuit.   The “Discworld” series also includes:

Will finds himself the unwilling lieutenant of a war-dragon of Babel that has arrived in postindustrialized Faerie and declared himself king, and soon becomes a hero to the city's homeless, who view him as a savior who can help them rebuild their lives.
