When two of sixteen-year-old Pete's childhood classmates disappear from a carnival the same night, he is a suspect, but his own investigation implicates other old friends he was with that evening--and a tough, knife-wielding enemy determined to keep him quiet.

As he enters into his first relationships as a gay man, a college freshman recalls the aching loneliness of life with his alcoholic physically abusive father in a community prejudiced against homosexuals.

 

Chbosky, Stephen.  The Perks of being a wallflower.

A coming of age novel about Charlie, a freshman in high school who is a wallflower, shy and introspective, and very intelligent. He deals with the usual teen problems, but also with the suicide of his best friend.


Cohn, Rachel.  Gingerbread.

After being expelled from a fancy boarding school, Cyd Charisse's problems with her mother escalate after Cyd falls in love with a sensitive surfer and is subsequently sent from San Francisco to New York City to spend time with her biological father.

Cohn, Rachel and Levithan, David. Naomi and Ely's no kiss list : a novel.

Although they have been friends and neighbors all their lives, straight Naomi and gay Ely find their relationship severely strained during their freshman year at New York University.

When Sam meets Toby, another boy who is attracted to both boys and girls, he discovers that both of them are struggling to learn where they fit in.

Seventeen-year-old Dimple, whose family is from India, discovers that she is not Indian enough for the Indians and not American enough for the Americans, as she sees her hypnotically beautiful, manipulative best friend taking possession of both her heritage and the boy she likes.

Ferris, Jean. Eight seconds.

18 year old John must confront his own sexuality when he goes to rodeo school and finds himself strangely attracted to an older boy who is smart, tough, complicated, gorgeous, and gay.

 

Ford, Michael Thomas. Suicide notes: a novel.  [2008].  

Fifteen-year-old Jeff wakes up on New Year's Day to find he has been admitted to the psychiatric ward after trying to kill himself and is offended that anyone would think he has anything in common with the other "crazies" in the hospital with him, but as his stay lengthens he begins to see he is more like them than he thought.

 

Francis, Brian. The secret fruit of Peter Paddington: a novel. [2005].

Peter Paddington is your typical thirteen-year-old paperboy with a few exceptions; he’s 204 pounds, at the mercy of an overactive imagination, and his only friend is a trash-talking beauty queen reject from across the street.  If that wasn’t bad enough, Peter’s nipples pop out one day and begin speaking to him, threatening to expose his private fantasies to an unkind world.

 

Forbes, Edith.  Navigating the Darwin Straits.

Computer geek Jordy McNeil is uprooted from the city of his childhood and moved to a tiny Western town where he struggles to adapt to his new surroundings and fit in with his new classmates.

 

Freymann-Weyr, Garret.  My Heartbeat.

As she tries to understand the closeness between her older brother and his best friend, fourteen-year-old Ellen finds her relationship with each of them changing.

Frost, Helen. Keesha's house.

Seven teens facing such problems as pregnancy, closeted homosexuality, and   abuse each describe in poetic forms what caused them to leave home and where they found home again.

Garden, Nancy. Annie on my mind.

Liza puts aside her feelings for Annie after the disaster at school, but eventually she allows love to triumph over the ignorance of people.

Fifteen-year-old Abby Savage hopes that her five rules for falling in love will keep her from making the same mistakes as her mother and two older sisters--all unwed mothers who have slept with the same man, among others--while she also tries to help her best friend Cody admit that he is gay, and decide how she really feels about Cody's older brother, Jackson.

 

Goldman, Steven. Two parties, one tux, and a very short film about the Grapes of wrath. [2008].  

Mitch, a shy and awkward high school junior, negotiates the difficult social situations he encounters, both with girls and with his best friend David, after David reveals to him that he is gay.

 

Greene, Bette. Drowning of Stephan Jones.

As her mother battles a citizens' group that wants to ban all "antiChristian" literature from the public library, Clara faces her own battle of torn loyalties when her boyfriend starts persecuting the homosexual owners of an antiques shop.

 

Hall, Lynn. Sticks and stones.

A seventeen-year-old boy's life is nearly destroyed when a rumor that he is a homosexual is started in his new high school.

 

Halpin, Brendan. Donorboy: a novel. [2004].

Rosalind, a fourteen-year-old orphan, becomes the ward of her biological father after the tragic death of her gay mother, and struggles with the adjustment of getting to know a father she never knew.

 

Harmon, Michael B. The last exit to normal. [2008].

Yanked out of his city life and plunked down in a small Montana town with his newly outed father and his father's boyfriend, seventeen-year-old Ben, angry and resentful about the changed circumstances of his life, begins to notice something is not quite right with the little boy next door and determines to figure out what is going on.

 

Hartinger, Brett.  Geography Club.

A group of gay and lesbian teenagers finds mutual support when they form the "Geography Club" at their high school.

Contains two stories, told in flip book format, in which friends Russel and Min see the same events from different perspectives as they work together as extras in a zombie film, while Russel deals with his parents'reaction to the news that he is gay, as well as the return of an old boyfriend, and Min struggles to accept her girlfriend's decision not to come out.

Hyde, Catherine Ryan. Becoming Chloe. [2008].

A gay teenage boy and a fragile teenage girl meet while living on the streets of New York City and eventually decide to take a road trip across America to discover whether or not the world is a beautiful place.

Jacobson, Jennifer. Stained

In Weaver Falls, New Hampshire, in 1975, seventeen-year-old Jocelyn looks for answers when her lifelong neighbor and friend, Gabe, turns up missing and she learns that, while her boyfriend has been telling everything to a priest, Gabe has been keeping terrible secrets.  

Johnson, Kathleen Jeffrie. Target.

After being brutally raped, Grady finally goes to a new high school where he meets an outgoing African American and several other students who try to help him deal with the horrible secret that is robbing him of his life.

Jones, Carrie. Girl, hero. [2008].

High school freshman Lily pours her heart out in letters to her hero, dead movie star John Wayne, in which she tells him about the death of her beloved stepfather, her mother's abusive boyfriends, her fears that her father is gay, getting the lead in the high school play, and her burgeoning romance with a classmate who reminds her of Mr. Wayne.

Juby, Susan. Another kind of cowboy.

In Vancouver, British Columbia, two teenage dressage riders, one a spoiled rich girl and the other a closeted gay sixteen-year-old boy, come to terms with their identities and learn to accept themselves.

Kerr, M. E. Deliver us from Evie.

Sixteen-year-old Parr Burrman and his family face some difficult times when word spreads through their rural Missouri town that his older sister is a lesbian, and she leaves the family farm to live with the daughter of the town's banker.

 

Kluger, Steve. My most excellent year: a novel of love, Mary Poppins, & Fenway Park. [2008].  

Three teenagers in Boston narrate their experiences of a year of new friendships, first loves, and coming into their own.

Three troubled high school seniors, who plan to run away together from Illinois to California after graduation, try to figure out who they are who they want to be.

Koja, Kathe. Talk

Kit auditions for a controversial school play and discovers his talent for acting; however, both he and his costar face crises in their view of  themselves and in their close relationships.

 

Konigsberg, Bill. Out of the pocket, [2008].

As Bobby Framingham, quarterback of his high school football team, finally acknowledges to himself that he is gay, events start to spin out of control when his sexual orientation is revealed in the student newspaper and then in the local press, and he learns that his father has cancer.

 

LaRochelle, David.  Absolutely, positively not

Chronicles a teenage boy's humorous attempts to fit in at his Minnesota high school by becoming a macho, girl-loving, "Playboy" pinup-displaying heterosexual.


Larson, Roger. What I know now.

In 1957 in California, having fallen in love with a young man who has come to his house to build a garden, a 14 year old gay boy finds his life and his world view changing.

Levithan, David. Wide awake.

In the not-too-distant future, when a gay Jewish man is elected president of the United States, sixteen-year-old Duncan examines his feelings for his boyfriend, his political and religious beliefs, and tries to determine his rightful place in the world.

Limb, Sue. Girl, nearly 16, absolute torture. [2005].

Jess knows her summer plans are ruined but little could she imagine the huge surprise that awaits her when she visits her dad's home for the first time in years.

 

Mac, Carrie. Crush. [2006].

During a summer in New York, Hope falls in love with another girl and must decide whether she is gay.

Sixteen-year-old Lissa's relationship with her best friend changes after they kiss at a party and Lissa does not know what to do, until she gets help from an unexpected new friend.

Newbery, Linda.  The Shell House.

Seventeen-year-old Greg's interest in photography draws him to a ruined mansion whose history becomes more personally relevant as he slowly discovers the tragic events that led to the destruction of the house during World War I.

 

O'Connell, Tyne. Pulling princes. [2004].

Calypso Kelly, a California teenager attending an upscale boarding school in England, sets out to become popular by claiming that her mother's gay assistant is her boyfriend and finds herself in a royal mess when she gets a  chance at a real relationship with a prince.

 

Papademetriou, Lisa and Tebbetts, Christopher. M or F?  a novel. [2005].  

Gay teen Marcus helps his friend Frannie chat up her crush online, but then becomes convinced that the crush is falling for him instead.

 

Peters, Julie Anne.  Luna.

Fifteen-year-old Regan's life, which has always revolved around keeping her older brother Liam's transsexuality a secret, changes when Liam decides to start the process of "transitioning" by first telling his family and friends that he is a girl who was born in a boy's body.

Sixteen-year-old Mary-Elizabeth "Mike" Szabo, struggling to understand her  father's suicide and her own homosexuality, reaches the breaking point when she falls in love with Xanadu, an exotic girl who has moved to small Coalton, Kansas, from the big city.  

Plum-Ucci, Carol.  What happened to Lani Garver.

Sixteen-year-old Claire is unable to face her fears about a recurrence of her leukemia, her eating disorder, her need to fit in with the popular crowd on Hackett Island, and her mother's alcoholism until the enigmatic Lani Garver helps her get control of her life at the risk of his own.

 

Reynolds, Marilyn. Love rules.

Seventeen-year-old Lynn experiences surprise, discomfort, and a new awareness of prejudices and stereotyping when her best friend Kit comes out as a lesbian.

While attending a summer institute, fifteen-year-old Nic meets another girl named Battle, falls in love with her, and finds the relationship to be difficult and confusing.

GSA Network is a youth-led organization that connects school-based GSAs with one another.
