Hello, I am Jody Havice, the elementary art teacher at Central and West Elementary. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Art Education K-12 and a Master’s Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in English as a Second Language from Kansas State University. I have been teaching in USD #320 since 2002.
What is the Elementary Art Program?
To give you some background information, the elementary art program in USD 320 is centered on a Discipline-Based Art Education (DBAE) approach. That means for each project:
- students participate in art history lessons about a specific artist or group of artists;
- students learn the art criticism process used for describing works of art from simple details to complex ideas;
- students work with aesthetics, and they create a piece of art during their art studio or class time.
In addition to DBAE, the students are also exposed to reading, writing, math, and problem-solving with each lesson to help support the School Improvement Plans for Central and West Elementary. This all takes place during their forty-minute once-a-week time frame. Therefore, in order to cover all of the necessary information, our lessons generally take several weeks to complete.
Where is Mrs. Havice?
My time is divided up evenly between Central and West Elementary. I spend Tuesdays, Wednesday Mornings, and Fridays at West Elementary. Mondays, Wednesdays Afternoons and Thursdays are spent at Central Elementary. Over the course of a week, I have the pleasure to work with 30 different groups of students. In order to see all of my students, we meet in 40 minute time blocks at Central Elementary and 35 minute blocks at West Elementary.
